Bassenthwaite Sailing Club

Bassenthwaite Sailing Clubs origins trace back to 1951. It all began when two brothers who were solicitors in a Workington practice, along with their wives and families, spent a seaside holiday on the Lleyn Peninsula in North Wales. During this holiday, they rented a 10-foot rowing dinghy and thoroughly enjoyed their time "messing about in boats."

Inspired by their newfound love for boating, the two brothers and their families decided to start a sailing club upon their return to West Cumberland. This decision marked the birth of Bassenthwaite Sailing Club, which has since become a thriving and beloved sailing community on the shores of Bassenthwaite Lake in Cumbria.

The club's founding members took their passion for sailing and turned it into a legacy, creating a place where fellow sailing enthusiasts could come together, enjoy the sport, and appreciate the natural beauty of the lake area. Since its inception, Bassenthwaite Sailing Club has likely grown in size and continued to foster a welcoming and vibrant sailing community.
